Who Is Dr. Michael J. Volk?
Dr. Volk’s history in Iowa is extensive, as he was raised in Cascade – a small city about 90 minutes north of Davenport. After graduating from Cascade High School, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Dubuque, where he studied Psychology, Philosophy, and English. Upon earning his Bachelor’s degree, Dr. Volk launched his education career with a move to Arizona, where he later attended Arizona State University and completed both his Master’s and Doctorate.
With more than 20 years of experience in education, Dr. Michael J. Volk brings extensive educational leadership experience to Horizon Science Academy Davenport. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, and previously worked with students, educators, and school communities (in both Arizona and Iowa) as an English Language Arts Teacher, Talented and Gifted Teacher and Coordinator, and as a Principal and Superintendent.
Dr. Volk focuses on improving student achievement, developing exceptional educators, strengthening school culture, and building collaborative partnerships with families and communities to help students succeed. As an advocate for student-centered education – where diversity, a strong school culture, and community involvement are as important as the content that is learned in the classroom – Dr. Volk’s approach to leadership emphasizes the importance of developing exceptional educators and then building relationships to create a positive, forward-thinking and collaborative approach to educating students. He strongly advocates for educators, parents, and students alike to be involved in service of their community, and he remains steadfast in his commitment to creating exceptional opportunities for every student.
