How Enrollment Works
We're dedicated to making the registration process as seamless as possible so you can focus on this exciting new chapter for your family. Here’s an overview of the steps and timeline:
Submit a New Student Application
The first step in enrollment is completing the New Student Enrollment Form. This form collects basic information and should take no more than 5-7 minutes to complete. In order to complete the application, you will be asked to create an account with PowerSchool, our online enrollment system.
Answer Questions and Take a Tour
After submitting an enrollment form, a Horizon Science Academy Davenport team member will reach out to answer any questions you may have. They will also help you schedule a tour so that you can explore our facilities, meet our dedicated staff, and discover what makes our school unique.
Lottery Drawing
If student applications exceed available spots, state law requires that we hold a lottery drawing to determine who is admitted. All applicants will be notified of their status promptly after the drawing.
Provide Registration Documents Upon Acceptance
Once accepted, you’ll need to submit the required registration documents to secure your student's spot. Timely submission helps us prepare for your child’s successful start at our school.
New Student Meet & Greet
Once enrolled, Horizon Science Academy Davenport will host a Meet & Greet for parents, guardians, and new students to connect with teachers, staff, and other new families. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted before the school year begins!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. I want to confirm you are 100% that you will open in August?
+Yes! The Iowa Department of Education approved our charter agreement to open and operate HSA as a charter public school beginning Fall 2025. Kindergarten Orientation is Friday, August 22, and the First Day of School for grades 1 through 6 is Monday, August 25.
2. Do you have a school calendar yet?
+Yes! The 2025–26 school calendar is available here. It includes all important dates including holidays, professional development days, and breaks.
3. What will the school hours be?
+School hours will be 8:00 AM – 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday.
4. Do you offer any after school programs?
+Yes! Like all Horizon Science Academies, we will offer after-school programs focused on academic support, enrichment activities, STEM clubs, and the arts. Programming will begin in the fall semester, and more information will be shared during orientation and the first weeks of school.
5. Will there be any transportation to or from school available?
+Unfortunately, our HSA is not able to offer bus transportation at this time. As the state does not provide funding for student transportation and the cost is significant, we are unable to cover the expense without it impacting other critical resources for our students. We understand this may be a challenge for some families, and we're committed to helping explore alternative solutions whenever possible.
6. Will Horizon offer breakfast and lunch programming?
+Yes! HSA Davenport will participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. All students will have access to nutritious, balanced meals every school day. Additional details, including menus and eligibility for free or reduced meals, will be provided during enrollment and orientation.
7. What is the deadline for registering a Kindergartener?
+The cutoff date for registration is September 15, 2025.
8. Will the teachers be licensed in the state of Iowa?
+Yes, they will all be licensed in the state.
9. What does HSA Davenport offer that the Davenport School System does not?
+HSA Davenport is a tuition-free, and non-selective charter public school. HSA provides state-aligned STEM-focused learning experiences. Student understanding is assessed regularly, and our expertly trained teachers ensure that students are supported or challenged appropriately at their level. Our small classes provide meaningful opportunities for teachers and staff to truly know students and families which creates a unique school culture where voices are heard and valued.
10. At what age do the children start with the One-on-One devices?
+Students begin using tablets and laptop devices from Kindergarten through Grade 6, primarily during small group instruction to promote skill building and interactive engagement. For a healthy balance, technology is used thoughtfully and with purpose—to enhance learning, provide individualized support, and build essential digital skills. Our teachers integrate screen time in ways that are developmentally appropriate and balanced with hands-on activities, collaborative work, and movement throughout the day.
11. How many days a week is online vs live teaching?
+Students engage in live (in-person) instruction each day of the school week. At this time, there is no online teaching. Technology is integrated within the school day during small group instruction to promote skill building and interactive engagement.
12. Will we have the resources for a child with auditory processing issues?
+We’re committed to supporting all of our students, including those with auditory processing challenges. That said, the specific resources and services a student may need are best determined through collaboration with Davenport’s school system and the IEP team at HSA Davenport.
13. Does being a Public Charter School change our obligations to public education?
+Being a public charter school does not change our obligations to public education. As a charter school in Iowa, HSA Davenport is a public school and is held to the same standards of accountability, equity, and access as traditional public schools. Our mission is to serve the public by offering innovative, student-centered learning within the public education system.
